The society is run by a committee of Year 10 girls who, under the supervision of the staff, are responsible for arranging all the fund raising events during the year.
Aims of the Society
- To do whatever possible to support worthy causes
- To help to train the girls to set up organisations
- To foster team spirit and a spirit of co-operation
- To enable the School to be active in the community, to foster the School's awareness of social needs, both in the local area and further afield, and demonstrate how young people can contribute to easing these difficulties
- To raise money for charity and thus understand the role that money plays in alleviating social problems
- To train children to handle money responsibly
- To share the joy of giving
Year 10 SAS representatives work closely with each year group throughout the school. Two main charities of their choice are supported each year, one to benefit people and the other to benefit animals or the environment. Representatives from these charities talk to the School in a special assembly at the start of the academic year and then are invited back to receive cheques in the summer term. In addition, the girls contribute every year to collections on specific charity days such as Poppy Day; they also support the R.N.L.I. and the Macmillan Nurses, including running our PSM Macmillan hot chocolate morning. They responded magnificently to recent international disasters such as the Tsunami in South-East Asia and the earthquake in the Kashmir/Pakistan region.
This year the girls have chosen to raise money for The Born Free Foundation and The Totally Different Playscheme in Bushey for children with disabilities. Charities supported in recent years are as follows:
2006 - 07 Jelly Babies(cot death) Water Aid
2005 - 06 NSPCC Wildlife through Whipsnade Zoo
2004 - 05 The Cystic Fybrosis Trust RSPB
2003 - 04 The Children's Wish Foundation Battersea Dogs' Home
2002 - 03 The Linda Jackson Centre, Mount Vernon Hospital RSPCA
