MATHEMATICS CHALLENGE     The UK Mathematics Challenge is one of the national mathematics competitions organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust. This year, girls taking part in both the Junior and the Intermediate Maths Challenge did extremely well. Last year, Stephanie Ross received a silver certificate and the “best in school” certificate in the Intermediate Maths Challenge. Zara Taylor also achieved silver certificates in the Intermediate Challenge. Shree Patel, Eugenia Rodrigues and Natalie Trup received a bronze certificate in the Intermediate Challenge.

MATHEMATICS MASTER CLASSES     Mathematics Master Classes are held by the Royal Institution of Mathematics. A select group of girls in Year 9 are chosen every year to participate in weekly sessions at Bentley Wood High School. These Master Classes not only allow the girls to further their ability in maths but also to explore maths outside the classroom.

Girls who wish to continue with these exciting Master Classes are invited to return in Year 10 and Year 11 for a series of more advanced Master Classes. These classes are monthly and take place at Imperial College London. These classes are inspirational and cover topics that are interesting and not usually taught in school. Some of these classes include Art in Fashion and paper folding. As well as learning and having fun in these Master Classes, the girls who attend are privileged to be taught be some of the best lecturers in England. Currently, Shree Patel, Eugenia Rodrigues and Zara Taylor attend the Year 11 Master Classes at Imperial College London. These lectures are a fantastic preparation for Maths and Further Maths A level study.

Drama

Last term was very busy for the drama department. The production of  ‘ The King and I’ was the Christmas musical. about the King of Siam who hired an English school teacher, Anna Leonowens, to teach his royal children and to introduce Western culture to Siam. As well as having girls in the senior department in the musical, we also had Year 5 girls playing some of the King’s many children and Amelia and Teniola from Year 2. All of the girls did really well. It was the most challenging and longest play we have ever done at PSM and we’re glad to say that our performances on the 2nd and 3rd of December were very successful. We also invited some local primary schools to watch our dress rehearsal on Monday 1st December. On behalf of the cast of “The King and I”, we would like to say a big thank you to Mr de Sousa and Mr Kesselman who helped us put the production together. They did a great job and we are all very grateful for their hard work.

In January the whole senior department went to see  “Les Misérables” and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Lastly, congratulations to Jemma Epstein in Year 11 who is one of our drama captains ,as she has been offered places at the drama schools, Italia Conti and Tring School of Performing Arts for Sixth Form.
